Nutrition and Hair Growth: What You Eat Matters

Why Nutrition Matters for Hair Health

Hair is one of the fastest-growing tissues in the body, and like any living tissue, it requires a steady supply of nutrients to thrive. Poor nutrition doesn't just slow growth — it can accelerate shedding, weaken follicles, and significantly impact the outcome of a hair transplant.

Key Nutrients for Hair Growth

Protein

Hair is made almost entirely of keratin — a protein. Aim for 1.2–1.6g of protein per kg of body weight daily. Best sources: chicken, eggs, fish, Greek yoghurt, legumes. This is especially important in the months post-transplant.

Iron

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional causes of hair loss. Best sources: red meat, lentils, spinach, fortified cereals. Pair with Vitamin C for better absorption.

Biotin (Vitamin B7)

Biotin supports the production of keratin and is widely regarded as a hair health staple. Found in eggs, nuts, seeds, and sweet potato. A daily supplement of 2,500–5,000mcg is commonly recommended.

Vitamin D

Low Vitamin D is increasingly linked to hair loss in research. Given the UK's limited sunlight, deficiency is extremely common. The NHS recommends supplementing 10mcg daily in autumn and winter.

Foods to Avoid

  • Excessive sugar: Spikes insulin and can increase DHT levels
  • Crash dieting: Sudden calorie restriction triggers telogen effluvium (stress shedding)
  • Alcohol: Depletes zinc and B vitamins, and impairs healing post-transplant
  • Ultra-processed foods: Low in micronutrients the follicle needs

Supplements Worth Considering

  • Nutrafol or Viviscal: Clinically studied hair growth formulas
  • Omega-3 fatty acids: Reduce scalp inflammation
  • Collagen peptides: Support scalp skin health and elasticity
  • Saw Palmetto: Natural DHT blocker, often used alongside Finasteride

The Bottom Line

No supplement replaces a surgical procedure for significant hair loss — but nutrition is the foundation everything else is built on. Getting your diet in order before and after a transplant will meaningfully improve your results. Book a consultation to discuss your full treatment plan.
