Recovery Timeline: What to Expect After Your Hair Transplant

Your Recovery Journey

Understanding the recovery timeline helps you prepare mentally and physically. While everyone heals at their own pace, this guide covers the typical recovery process.

Day 1–3: Immediate Post-Procedure

  • Redness: The donor and recipient areas will be red and slightly swollen
  • Mild Discomfort: You may feel tightness or slight tenderness
  • Small Scabs: Tiny scabs will form around each transplanted follicle
  • Keep your head elevated while sleeping and avoid touching the transplanted area

Days 4–14: Early Recovery

Swelling begins to subside and scabs soften. Begin gentle washing as instructed (usually day 3–5) using the provided shampoo. Pat dry gently — never rub.

Weeks 2–4: The "Shock Loss" Phase

Transplanted hairs will shed during this phase. This is completely normal. The follicles remain intact beneath the surface and will produce new hair growth. 60–90% of transplanted hairs will shed temporarily.

Months 2–6: Growth Begins

Around month 3, tiny new hairs will start emerging. By month 4–6, approximately 30–40% of your final results will be visible. Hair may appear thin and fine initially — this is normal and improves steadily.

Months 6–12: Accelerated Growth

60–90% of final results become visible. Hair thickens and the transplanted area starts looking fully natural. By 12–18 months, you'll see the complete final result.

Tips for a Smooth Recovery

  • Eat a protein-rich diet to support hair growth
  • Stay hydrated and avoid smoking and alcohol
  • Protect your scalp from direct sunlight for the first 3 months
  • Contact your clinic with any concerns — no question is too small
